My aim in writing this book is to explore, from a modern psychological and biological perspective, what the Buddha was telling us. The ancient text and the modern point of view both complement and clarify each other.
In my over 30 years of study, reflection and meditation experience in Buddhism, I have noticed that the teachings of the Buddha are often shrouded in a mystical or theistic point of view which, I believe, obscures the original intention of the Buddha. This book will show that the Buddha’s teachings are best understood as a psychology in which the mind is the prime mover for the transformation and wisdom needed for the culmination of insight development – Awakening or Enlightenment.
Buddha maintained that the experience of Enlightenment was the ultimate phenomenological foundation of both the self and the world, while dening that an authentic self existed. Once we stop focusing on our illusionary virtual reality of a self, an amazingly complex, dynamic and interrelated world appears to us ‘as it is’. The Buddha’s systematic Eightfold Path is a concise and clear plan showing how to proceed to reach the goal of Nibbāna, or Enlightenment, returning us to knowing our ‘original mind’. This book will explain in a psychological perspective how we can understand better the Buddha’s doctrine and succiently apply it into our contemporary culture.
Excerpt
The Buddha's teachings are, at heart, a way of life based on a revolutionary psychology which emphasises the cultivation of wisdom and compassion. Through an exploration of significant, recent findings and thought in psychology, neuroscience, biology, physics, linguistics, ecology and culture, this book shows how the Buddha's teachings are at the cutting edge of the new direction that psychology must take to reflect and apply the latest trends in science.
