Chapter One -- Miss Goldie’s Cat
“That darn cat!”
Lois, age 10, heard the angry words. They came from her neighbor, Miss Goldie.
She hurried across her yard to Miss Goldie’s house. Why would Miss Goldie shout rough words at her cat, Morris? She loved her red tabby cat.
Lois ran around the corner of Miss Goldie’s house. Miss Goldie stood by her backdoor.
“Is something wrong?” Lois burst out.
“Oh, hi, Lois.” Miss Goldie chuckled. “I can’t find Morris. He always has his breakfast by now.”
Morris was an indoor-outdoor cat. He lived outdoors in fair weather. Otherwise, he slept in Miss Goldie’s house. He always ate his meals inside.
“He’s been gone before, hasn’t he?” Lois asked. She hoped to comfort Miss Goldie.
“Oh, he has,” the older woman said, “but that was before he had the operation.”
Morris was a five-year-old, male, red-tabby cat. The name red tabby was misleading. Morris’ fur had stripes of yellow-to-gold colors with an all-white tip on his tail. Through her ultraviolet sunglasses, though, Lois could see the red color in his fur.
Miss Goldie had had her cat spayed or neutered. That meant he could not make kittens with a female cat. Miss Goldie didn’t want him to make kittens because finding homes for the kittens was difficult. Also before the operation, Morris had roamed at night and returned scratched and wounded from fights with other cats.
“Maybe Mrs. Ed served something special,” Lois suggested.
Miss Goldie and Lois had seen Morris mosey across the street to Mrs. Ed’s yard.
Mrs. Ed was known to feed other cats.
“He could have eaten there,” Miss Goldie agreed. “Want to come in for a doughnut?”
“I can’t. I have to watch Lily while Mom vacuums.” Lily was Lois’s baby sister.
Lois loved visiting Miss Goldie. She went often to tell Miss Goldie the neighborhood news. She called Lois her reporter.
Miss Goldie was eighty years old and always found something good to say about a person.And she had the best treats in the neighborhood.
“Lois!”
That was her mother’s familiar voice. “Coming, Mom!” she called.
As Lois left, Miss Goldie added with a giggle, “Don’t get lost!”
LOIS TO THE RESCUE by CAROL HEGBERG is a nifty little take-anywhere chapter book/coloring book with easy to color black and white illustrations. The covers, front and back, are very colorful and eye-catching. Carol's choice of font is easy to read with large illustrations on the opposite pages. The book is the perfect child's companion for that short one hour trip.
Lois is a cute polite ten-year-old girl on a mission. She cares deeply about her friends and neighbors, especially Miss Goldie. Sadly, Miss Goldie has lost her cat, Morris. That darn cat, where is he? Miss Goldie is too old to look high and low for Morris so Lois is determined to find Morris for her friend. Lois has several adventures as she searches for Morris. This was a cute little chapter book for your young reader. I liked Lois's relationship with Miss Goldie. It was nice of her to find out what happened to Morris when he came missing. The chapters are short and will hold your child's attention. This is a good book to keep them entertained on a car trip. The book's illustrations are done so your child can use this book as a coloring book. They can make the scenes their own by coloring them the way they want to. A cute book.
