Excerpt
I was discharged from the healthcare center on July 5, 2013. What a sense of being "reborn!" At the same time, I wasn't prepared to be as weak as I found that I was. I had underestimated the fatigue I would feel after returning home. It's easy to forget that after a major surgery there is no bounding back.
I decided to restart a ten-week exercise and weight management program I had done in 2009. I enrolled in the October 31, 2013 class, then did five more months of continuation. By March 31, 2014, I had lost 36 pounds.
I attended every lecture on healthy, nutritious eating and cooking that was offered. I took the free grocery shopping trip and quizzed the fantastic trainers. I was doing two miles in 45 minutes on the Nu-Step machine, along with 45 minutes of weight lifting for balance and strength training. I can optimistically support this program. All the staff deserve kudos!
Now I am again making lifestyle changes. A note here--it feels so freeing to sleep in the bed with my husband, not in a hospital bed with rails up. Turning over and feeling his warm body was something I certainly had missed. I have been eating healthier than ever before, appreciating family and friends, enjoying my return to normalcy, and thanking God for his mercy.
At the same time, I am aware that every day is a gift and that I may need a surgical revision for my shunt in five to seven years. I have been through an incredible journey, and there is no turning back! I pray that others will find the kind of help I have received, and for the furtherance of research on NPH. Thanks be to Go who gives us victory through the avenues of faith and perseverance.
