The answers to Jade’s future come in a secret room and mountain of journals.
There is an energy vortex in Chi’país, Mexico. Rumor has it the elderly Zipacna created the vortex to lure unsuspecting outsiders (and their tuition) to his school of shamanism. Within the spiritual world, it was a celebrated center for spiritual training, teaching at levels beyond the ‘back to Mother Earth’ that centuries of shamans learned.
Granddaughter Jade inherits the property thinking it’s a hotel. When townspeople shun her, and someone tries to frighten her away, she is baffled, but believes they will come around in time. She discovers the energy vortex but all she knows is it makes her feel invigorated. Until the arrival of 8-year-old Miguel, who, through his spiritual connection to Zipacna, helps awaken a shocking asset: her seer and healer’s ability, which she comes to realize she had all along.
A secret room imparts the knowledge she needs to embrace her spirituality and find a way to bring it to the world. She comes to terms with her legacy, repairs relationships thought long lost, and reopens the school.

Bright sun lasered holes in Jade’s eyelids. She squinched them open and raised her head. Morning. Finally. At least the pain had subsided. What time was it? Hopefully Juan would be here soon and would take her to the hospital.
The thirst returned with a vengeance so bad it was like her insides shriveled. This must be what a grape felt like turning into a raisin. Damn, what she wouldn’t give for a cup of coffee. And a trip to the bathroom.
Jade tilted to the side, braced her hands behind her, and levered her upper body into a sitting position. The motion turned her hips and legs so her heels were flat on the floor. Her left sneaker nudged the ladder leg.
No pain.
Three cheers for that at least.
Jade wedged her hands closer to her hips to help with balance. The movement straightened her legs out before her.
What? She squinted.
Both ankles were identical. Wow, awesome. That meant the swelling had gone down. Maybe the bone wasn’t broke as bad as she’d thought. The joint rotated with total flexibility.
What on earth was going on?
She got to her feet using the ladder for support in case things went south. Still, nothing hurt. Okay, good.
Bathroom, then coffee—in that order.
Later, steaming cup in hand, seated out back with the patio dark with morning shade, Jade examined her legs, ankles and feet. Not a sign that indicated anything had been wrong. As a matter of fact, she wasn’t quite sure which ankle had hurt. So, what happened? Had it been a dream? No, definitely not. More likely it was a nightmare.
And what about the voice? There had been a voice, right?

Author Cindy Davis creates a thought-provoking story of a young woman who listens to an inner voice and travels through her journey of self-awareness. Jade gives up her transitional, successful job, and friends to move to Mexico when her grandfather leaves his property and an unknown legacy to her. The setting, visions, and mystical traces of shamanistic wisdom reminds readers that we each can find our soul’s purpose.
In this small town, Jade finds herself immediately open to new discoveries and spiritual guidance that are difficult to label as real or imagined. She finds herself unsettled but determined to push forward.
The writing is crisp and clean, carrying the reader along with Jade when she meets the locals, who share their knowledge of her grandfather. Then, it will keep you turning the page until the end.
“He leaned toward her. “May I?” He gestured toward her face.
“Yes.”
He grasped the leather strap around her neck and inched the pendant from inside the shirt, then fingered the feathers at the end. He nodded as if it was just as expected.
“Grandfather gave it to me when I was five. I’ve always treasured it.”
“Those stones are jade, as you probably know. Between them are two quetzal feathers.”
She repeated the strange word.
“A quetzal, in conjunction with the snake god Quetzalcoatl—the most popular god, by the way—is seen as a symbol for goodness and light. I think that describes you to a T. You will be a godsend to us.”
“Thank you.” A godsend? Us? Gosh, what was going on here? Best to continue to let him talk and possibly divulge more.
“I guess you’re curious why I’m here.”
Jade gave a small laugh. “I didn’t think you came to sample the hardness of my ice cubes. Or check out my choice of paint colors.” She held up the pendant. “Or verify this.”
As the novel unfolds, the author shares her thoughts and convictions on the individual growth of a person’s extended awareness. Jade discovers her path as revealed by the spirit of Zipacna, her grandfather. It makes one pause to reflect on how an open-minded person can increase awareness beyond the physical plains of life.
Clearly, a great deal of research was done in creating this story, but it's not a textbook read. Much like Don Quixote, this is a delightful read that compels you to enjoy the path of self-awareness. I highly recommend this book to those who like to think beyond familiar themes. It illustrates other cultures and belief systems in a thoroughly entertaining manner.

Zipacna's Legacy by Cindy Davis is an imaginative, thought-provoking exploration of a mystical journey of awakening. The threads of storytelling are expertly woven in this metaphysical and visionary fiction that will keep the reader engaged from the first page to the last.
I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the story in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a well written metaphysical and visionary fiction with perfect pacing.
Zipacna's Legacy is more than a fantasy. It is exploring what could be if we only learn how to relax and be open to the possibilities of this world rather than narrowly relying solely on logic, science and hard work that limit our imaginations. Imagination is what leads to creativity, invention and ultimately the progress of both human civilization and the soul. I doubt anyone who reads this beautiful book will be likely to forget the possibilities it opens. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.
