Akokoduro Local Authority clusters of Schools’ football pitch is the venue for this year’s durbar to commemorate the biggest Addae called Addaekese. This durbar is being held to climax week-long celebration of activities planned for by the people of Akokoduro and since it falls on a Sunday, it is commonly referred to as Akwasidae festival. The Addaes are celebrated every 40 days or once every 6 weeks, irrespective of the day it falls, however, it is especially magnificent when it falls on a Sunday. For Ghanaians and the people of Akokoduro, the ninth Addae is by and large celebrated as a national durbar, where dignitaries from far and near are attracted to Akokoduro to witness and participate in the event.
Indeed, this is the major festival of the people of Akokoduro. It is celebrated to remember their past leaders and heroes. Though they are dead, their spirits are believed to be alive and taking interests in the affairs of the living, watching their actions, and consulting with them during the Addae festivals. More so, these festivals are also held to purify the land and allow the citizenry to go into the New Year with hope.
This year’s anniversary is very special to Nana Addai, because he is the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs and by default the President of that region, if the country were to be a federal state. By this festival, he is hosting all the other nine Regional House of Chiefs’ Presidents, including Otumfuo Obuabisa, the Chief President of the country and the head of all the Presidents of the various regional house of chiefs in the country.
During this time, the country was practicing a system of government termed as Monarchical Democracy. The country is divided into ten regions and depending upon the size of a region subdivided into districts; in all there are two hundred and sixteen districts in the country. With this type of system, every paramount king has an equal opportunity to contest elections to be the President of the district house of chiefs, then to the regional house of chiefs before the National House of Chiefs. Indeed, the President of the National House of Chiefs is the head of state of the country. Over there, all the ten Regional House of Chiefs have equal chance of becoming the Chief President every four years on rotational basis. They are ten because they represent all the ten regions of the country.
This year’s Addae festival started on Monday with the first of the two phases of the celebration. This is a solemn private observance which are performed at Nana Addai’s palace chambers by accredited members of the royal family and other functionaries. It includes rituals aimed at cleansing the spirit of the incumbent king and the presentation of ceremonial sacrificial meal and drinks to their ancestral spirits. Their blessing and protection guide the kingdom of Akokoduro to prosperity.
On Tuesday, the women of Akokoduro under the leadership of the King’s wives in the persons of Eno Dabanka, Yaa Buronya, Akosua Konadu and Abena Agyeiwaa clean the palace and its surroundings as well as every household and surroundings in the town. Women and children of all ages are seen clearing and desilting gutters, other are sweeping the main and connecting roads and streets whilst many gather rubbish and carry it to a common site near the cemetery, where it is burnt. The males are not left out in these preparations since they clear all the bushes, gather them and burn the offcuts. Others are also seen painting tree trunks, houses, walls and street pavements all geared towards making Akokoduro attractive to visitors.
Wednesday is the day Nana Addai and his sub chiefs, popularly called “Adikro” or “Odikro” for singular; who are the chiefs of the smaller surrounding towns under Akokoduro paramountcy, sit at the former’s palace to receive a procession of carts and animals decorated with flowers and carrying the finest and fattest farm produce from the land. These gifts to the palace is a clear measurement of the preceding year’s bounty harvest. One of the carts carry an effigy of Nana Ansa Sasraku, the founder of Akokoduro dressed in red cloth with bead talisman tied around his head, left and right shoulders and legs. He carries a double barrel gun across his neck symbolizing the struggle of the people Akokoduro from a cave around Timbucktu in ancient Mali empire, the fights and hunger they went through before they came to settle in their present place. This effigy will be kept at the palace and present to the people on Sunday. The occasion comes to a close at exactly mid-day, where all the sub chiefs departs to their various destinations carrying along their share of the booty.
