Life in a new town was exhilarating to Kelly, as was driving her new car. The outdoor air smelled fresh, and the automobile's interior intoxicated her senses. But better than both was her newfound freedom and the number of cute boys she'd seen this semester at school in Gainesville, Florida.
At age nineteen, this was Kelly's first year in university, her first year away from home, and her first year living as an adult.
Growing up in Miami, the heat and humidity were stifling. The calm blue skies change hourly from tranquil and serene to cloudy and grey, making the weather potentially dangerous to boaters and outdoor thrill seekers.
The temperature in Gainesville felt brisk and invigorating to Kelly, who welcomed the change. The night sky was crystal clear, perfect for viewing space, especially Venus, the planet of love, and stars like Sirius, the closest star to Earth after the sun.
Kelly spent endless nights passionately photographing Sirius, the rainbow star that flickered with colors. She was an avid stargazer who spent most nights fixated on the constellation Orion, and thanks to Grandma Evans, she had a professional telescope to fulfill her hobby.
Last night, twinkling stars filled the atmosphere, and a full moon made the world so bright that Kelly excitedly swore to roommate and best friend Stevie Fox that she could see for miles while peering over the fence in the densely lit garden surrounding their rental home.
Still sleepy, she rolled out of bed early in the morning and reluctantly studied for a university exam later that week. After several cups of coffee at ten o'clock, she showered, dressed, and chose to explore Gainesville, especially the parks and recreational areas that interested her the most.
Following a visit to Paynes Prairie State Park in the nearby town of Micanopy, Kelly floored the gas pedal on the blue convertible and raced along bustling city streets. She sped through mounds of fallen leaves in shades of red, amber, and brown, thrilled as they blew up and over the coupe's windshield.
Thinking about the park's large wetland, scattered shrubs, and pines where wild horses and bison roam the prairie, she was excited to see new species of birds and plants. She also looked forward to seeing stars and planets and hoped to see rocket launches on a clear night.
Driving along, listening to the radio, a lonesome man sang country music, and though she'd never heard the song before, Kelly quickly learned the lyrics and sang along to a tune about whisky and women.
At noon, Kelly drove along Newberry Road, passing stores and restaurants like a supersonic jet in flight, and just when she felt she could fly, she saw something that would alter her destiny forever.
It was ironic that on that Wednesday afternoon, fate would present itself, neatly wrapped in a vibrant red bow, a gift she couldn't refuse even if she had wanted to.
Kelly was born on a Wednesday, her parents died on a Wednesday, and it was a Wednesday when she spotted a disheveled man sitting with a dog by the side of the road.
Stopped at a red light on a busy intersection, she watched them feast on hamburgers from a nearby restaurant, and after spotting a pet store, she decided to assist the man by gifting his dog a bag of nutritious kibble.
Quickly, Kelly counted twenty dollars in cash, more than enough for food and any leftover change she'd give the man. If he bought beer? So be it; she was nobody to judge.

The friday night that doesn't quit!
This read was a rollercoaster, no doubt. It's like diving into a Friday night that just doesn't quit, with all the twists you didn't see coming. The characters felt real enough; like people you might bump into if you were out in Miami yourself. Brad's the kind of guy you root for, even when you're not sure if Kelly's gonna give him the time of day. Speaking of Kelly, her journey hit me right in the feels - it's tough, raw, and kinda makes you wanna reach through the pages to offer a helping hand or a shoulder. The pace kept me hooked, wondering how it was all gonna wrap up in just one night. And that ending? Didn't see it coming but it felt like the right way to close the night. It's not your typical love story, and maybe that's why it sticks with you - it's gritty, it's real, and yeah, it's got that spark of hope that maybe, just maybe, the good guys can win.
A Rollercoaster of Emotions
This gripping tale weaves a web of love, betrayal, and redemption that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Kelly's plight is heart-wrenching, and Josh's cunning is downright chilling. Brad's journey to save her is the emotional anchor that tugs at your heartstrings. The unpredictable twists make "No Night So Long" a page-turner, leaving you breathless until the very end. An electrifying read that's as intense as it is moving.
Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions that'll leave you wanting more!
Great read, excellent story!!
This book is an outstanding story, and I haven't read such feel-good vibes in quite some time.
Firstly, I like that Kelly has a good relationship with her grandmother and admits to her mistakes and choices, but more importantly, she admits to being excruciatingly stubborn. As a young woman, Kelly seems to battle everyday situations that plague most women in their early twenties. Though I'm much older, the escapades she goes through remind me of days gone by and bring added relief that I'm out of the dating scene.
Secondly, it's pretty obvious the author put a lot of thought into building her character, and the same goes for her friends Abby, Stevie, love-struck Brad, and awful Josh. About the characters, I did honestly enjoy Kyle Jackman, who is an egotistical, oinking fool, and yet the author managed to make him come across as misunderstood and adorable.
In resume, the book is supposedly a fictional story, yet it reads so real you may feel like you've lost a bunch of friends at the end of the tale, as that's precisely how I feel sitting here looking at the book that captivated me for days. Still, I did like the ending, though I wasn't expecting such a simple scenario to capture my thoughts and keep me hooked on what happens next in hoping there's a sequel. I suppose that's how books about life are - pages full of ups and downs!
