Christmas Eve 1997 – Intrepid Travellers Set Forth
Funny, the people you encounter on aeroplanes! Perhaps I've got a built-in magnet that draws oddballs to me. This particular one was male, grossly overweight and at least six foot tall. He kept his thick padded coat on for the entire eight-hour flight so that he appeared much larger.
He talked incessantly from the moment I took my seat. He talked to me, to my husband Ron, and to the six people within earshot in front and behind us, as well as the four people on the centre seats across the aisle. His booming, monotonous, voice thundered on and on about goodness knows what, his family, his work, his religion, his town, his local shops, and anything else you can think of that was not the remotest bit interesting to me or those around me.
That wasn't all! From time to time he read his newspaper, a large broadsheet paper. He read his paper out loud, every single word of every single news item. Because of his great size and the reach of his arms I was reading his paper as well. I didn't want to. I had my own tabloid paper, in my opinion, far more sensible for such a confined space. His voice rumbled on. He seemed to have the ability to read one thing and talk about another simultaneously. Eventually, he folded his paper, sat back, and shut his eyes.
Did he sleep? No! He still babbled on non-stop!
Now that he was no longer holding his newspaper he had both hands free. One scratched somewhere inside his jacket, while the other was trying to reach his brain via his right nostril. Since I was sitting to his right I had his right elbow in my ear. In my very sleepy mind I nicknamed him ‘Elbow’. Elbow's scratching hand travelled up to his left ear and then down to his groin. I tried to look the other way, but when there's only three inches between you and someone else it's very difficult not to peep.
