For a moment I thought she might bring out the big guns—perhaps lash her painted nails across my cheek and call me an odorous bastard, or lift her shoe under the table and assassinate my Gerald Upman—but her countenance calmed and even became more pleasant and passive than it was before. She reclined in her chair, and I did the same in mine. We looked out through the window and saw that the gulls had taken to combing the beach. The bulk of the storm had passed. The ocean calmed us.
