Ryan Mercer, a handsome, championship Pro surfer collides with Lydia McLelland, a lovely but troubled young teacher in the midst of a horrific oil spill that threatens the Great Bear Rain Forest and the Spirit Bear in British Columbia, Canada. The result is the start of a love-hate relationship involving clashing world views, erupting emotions and drastic attempts to ameliorate the devastation on wildlife, and marine life that a huge oil spill has brought. A sea lion is rescued from the spill but can't be returned to the ocean as a huge area has been destroyed.

VISION QUEST:
Beth drummed and chanted rhythmically for quite some time before she felt herself drifting into a dream state. She found her consciousness entering into the body of a magnificent, Bald Eagle. She looked around. It felt good to be an eagle, without the constraints of a human body. She flexed her strong wings. Beth sensed that she could fly freely and soar in ever increasing circles with the air currents above the magnificent forest and ocean fjords of the Kitimat, B. C. wilderness. Suddenly she was seeing with the eagle's eyes. She was looking at the edge of her vision. Beth gasped as there was a scene taking place before her. On the rocks below a group of sea lions were huddled together on one of the rocky outcroppings in a fjord. She went into a dive to observe the sea lions more closely and as she pulled up and circled overhead Beth could tell that the sea lions were very happy. The mammals were barking joyously and sunning themselves in the diminished but still warming sunlight of the winter.
Beth knew that the sea lions were digesting a meal of rockfish that had ventured too close to the sea lions rockery. Suddenly her eagle eyes were focusing on a particularly large rock fish in the water off the rockery. She had a sudden desire to devour the delicious object. Instantly she shanged direction, dove down and seized the rockfish in her strong talons. Suddenly as Beth reached the water something horrible happened. She felt herself inhaling hideous fumes and the pristine, emerald water turned to a black, thick substance. The sticky substance reached the bottom of her feathers but she managed to flap her powerful wings and become airborne again.
She landed at the top of a nearby tree. Beth was filled with horror. The rockfish was dead and covered in a dark, tarry substance. The skin under her feathers where the sticky substance had reached was burning and she had enormous trouble breathing. Her heart was beating fiercely. Beth gasped as she realized she was dying. She felt herself released from the eagle's body.
Beth opened her eyes in the damp cave of her ancestors. She was having trouble breathing and her stomach was trying to release its contents. Beth stared at the barely, visible, grey rock walls around her and felt enormous defeat. She knew she had been given a vision not only for her future but for the future of mankind.
Beth let her body shake as the meaning of the vision flowed into her mind. Mankind is at an Eagles edge, she interpreted. The modern world of worldwide consumerism. It is an Edge of Complacency, an edge of Apathy combined with a massive loss of perspective. People of the Consumer world live in an "All about Me" existence lost in a "What I want in the Here and Now" attitude, with a total loss of long term perspective. Mankind makes only short-term decisions not thinking at all of the long term. That kind of thinking can destroy the earth as we know it, if not the entire planet. Beth knew what she had to do. She retraced her steps down the mountain.
Once she reached her house in Kitimaas Village she phoned the Chief and requested a public meeting about what to do about the Tar Sands Pipeline decision.
