Destitute Emmi Sanders came south from Boston after the death of her father. She's been hired as a companion and nurse to an older gentleman. She thinks of herself as little more than a servant and is shocked when her employer treats her as a guest. That's not the only strange thing about this house. Harmful things begin to happen to her, and the female cousin to the old man tells her not to trust any of the men in the house. Someone is trying to force her to leave. Emmi must decide who wants her gone and why. Suspicion points to her employer, a man she finds attractive, a man who warms her heart, a man she is sure she could learn to love. But, is he the one who wants her gone? And, if she leaves her post, will her heart stay behind?

Slowly, he turned and my breath caught. A spear of unknown sensation shot through me and I staggered back. Never in my life had I faced a man with such a handsome demeanor.
He was tall, much taller than any man of my acquaintance, over six feet, and very muscular. He had a square face, a jaw as firm and rigid as I had ever seen and a full mustache covered the upper lip of his full mouth. He had dark, intense brown eyes, and his thick wavy hair was nearly black. He was breath-catching handsome with an aura of confidence radiating from him that quite took my breath away. No wonder this man gave orders and everyone bowed to his commands.
He also seemed cold. As if there was no one, or nothing for which he held any real affection. I wondered if I could grow to like a man so obviously cold.
He pointed to one of several chairs surrounding the huge desk which occupied a place of honor in the room.
"Please be seated," he ordered, his voice curling around me.
Suddenly, I was afraid. What did this man want with me? Why had I been summoned?
