Excerpt
Journeying on horseback through the darkened woods of Almor, his body shivering and feverish, Warwick knew that this would be the time and place he was to die. During the battle he had suffered a dagger wound to the chest. He had seen such wounds before--on men who had perished. That was the way of the knight, to risk all for God, country and honour. It was to be expected. But the purpose of his devotion had waned. Life had ceased to hold any more cheer or hope for him for quite some time now, which had contributed to this end. It was fitting that he was here, far from home, far from those he loved and cherished, that he could breathe his last breath, alone.
Warwick closed his eyes and suddenly found himself in Inversweign, at his family's humble estate--feeling the warmth of the fire in their quaint home, smelling the aroma of venison, hearing his mother's tinkling laughter and the raucous chuckling of his father. Though their lives were full of struggle and strife, he had witnessed their unfashionably open affections for one other, their strength in each other's love-- Warwick could not help but smile at their good fortune. The vision faded as hazy consciousness returned to him.
