At the same time, the note of fright in her voice, plus the knowledge that she was right about not knowing who she could trust, clouded my desire to quit. There was also the feeling that I was leaving a job half done. In truth, my task wouldn't really be over until she had given her blood and was on her way back to her own life. Then, too, a burning pool of anger in my chest would nag me the rest of mhy life if I didn't find out who was trying to kill her---and me.
"All right. I'll stick around until we get this thing resolved."
She said nothing, but I was shocked when she reached across the seat and took hold of my hand. I kind of wished she hadn't done that. Until then I could have changed my mind, walked away. But the simple act of trust was more powerful than any words. I was committed for the duration, my life as much on the line as hers. Now, there was no turning back.
