Without warning, unexpected and unexplained electrocution-like pains violently began to course through the right side of my face and my jaw. For seven years the pain threatened my health, my career, and my personal life. My relationship with God was initially damaged. I did not blame my pain on Him, but I wanted Him to make it stop. I had been ill before, but there had always been a way to regain my health. These healings has resulted from surgery, a better diet, rest, medication, or supernatural means. This time God did not seem to be on the scene.
Sometimes the pain made speaking impossible and noise intolerable. A cool breeze on my face, brushing my teeth, and washing my face caused me to feel as though a bolt of lightening had struck the right side of my head. The pain occurred at random times: waking me from a sound sleep; sitting quietly in church; receiving a gentle kiss from my husband; or speaking. The extreme nature of the pain was impossible for me to describe or define.
My classroom, once filled with the antics and laughter that are involved in learning and teaching drama, had become a silent desert. It was occupied by a teacher who could no longer communicate her knowledge or ideas to her students. When the pains occurred during class, I tried to hide from my students. I did not want them to see the pain as it ravaged my very being. My heart was touched by my students’ concern for me, yet I was dismayed by their fears for me. There were times that I crouched behind my desk, silently asking God why He had forsaken me.
