The internet is the greatest gift to authors looking to market their work. The number of free or low-cost methods of getting the word out about your book is mind-boggling.

Excerpt

Your book represents many, if not all, of your hopes and dreams. It’s likely got years of your work, and quite a bit of your money, tied up in it. Your potential readers (your target audience) are the people who will one day read your book. They are interested in your subject matter and would benefit from reading what you have to say about it. They would even be willing to pay for your book...if they only knew about it. But there’s a gap between your book and these people. How are you going to bridge that gap?

Hopefully, you did your basic marketing research before writing your book. You should already know why you wrote your book, and what you expect it to do for you. You should have already defined your primary target audience, and any additional audiences you hope to reach with your book. You should have designed a profile for each target audience, refining it into a single-person “avatar” for each, to whom you will address all your marketing. With my author marketing clients, I refer to this as an Ideal Reader Avatar, or IRA.

If you have not done these things, do them now. You must know this basic information to effectively market your book. If you need help with this, one of the author marketing services offered by Thompson Writing & Editing helps you with it.

I don’t imagine for an instant that anybody will do everything discussed in this book. But a lot of times, we don’t know what we don’t know…that is to say, there may be very important parts you should have in place for your author marketing of which you are completely unaware. Hopefully you will be able to use this book as a reference and a starting point to get your book marketing going in the right direction. Pick out the things that meet your own needs and concentrate on boosting your book sales with those.

Reviews for "An Author's Guide to Online Marketing, Second Edition"

Reviewed by Ronald Hull 7/22/2020
I must confess two things: I don't read very much and marketing has been the least of my concerns. As a writer, my focus has always been on the content of my work. Sure, I would like others to read what I write, so I have published almost everything I've written since 1999. I also post all of my short stories and some of my books, chapter by chapter, here.

I have been on the Internet since 1997 when I opened my website. But I haven't, except for AD, engaged in social media. I have a Facebook account with hardly anything on it. I already have had, free from my publisher, a very good marketing book but have hardly scratched the suggestions, because I don't have the time or energy to engage in constant surfing for sites that will carry my books and allow me to complete all the information required to advertise through them. Many of which, I would have to "join."

But from what I know from the authors here, many need help with online marketing, so I'm sure your book will get a following. From your bio you seem to be a very energetic marketer. So I believe this book in its second edition will be very helpful for those like my cousin who just published her book, 51 Shades of Online Dating. But she already knows the Internet social sites much better than I. In the small time I allot each day for reading mostly from magazines, I am halfway through her very informative book after a week of reading every day for about one half hour. You can see why I don't read many books.
