Prem Chopra presents the collective wisdom of centuries in a story as modern as the computer. The messages are simple as the reader journeys through the life of Pete Camerom, a young Internet executive who must find the inner strength for the challenges of a new age. Your spirit will be elevated and your mind stimulated with this beautiful and inspiring book!
"Prem Chopra has written in an amazingly simple way a profound book that can help anyone improve their understanding of the meaning of life and its purpose. He shows through stories and vignettes how to find purpose in life and pursue it in a systematic way--regardless of whether the journey is material or spiritual.
"I believe that our world would be a better place if we learn and practice the lessons demonstrated in this book through the life of Pete Cameron. I strongly recommend The Purpose and Meaning of Life to anyone in government, industry and private life." Jim Hall, Former Chairman, National Transportation Safety Board, Washington, DC.
"Protagonist Pete Cameron is a perceptive observer whose journey through life is compelling, contagious and stimulating. The Purpose and Meaning of Life is filled with both warm wisdom and good, old-fashioned common sense. It deserves careful reading and re-reading. The author of this inspirational book, Dr. Prem Chopra, is a perceptive observer whose insights about life can be read with interest and enlightenment." Frederick W. Obear, University Professor and Chancellor Emeritus, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
"The ‘brook’ is the place where all movement, thinking, resting and even meditation takes place. To think of life without at least considering Dr. Chopra’s ‘brook theory,’ is like considering light without electricity. The 'brook' is the force and fact of life.
"It becomes incumbent upon each of us to consider each thing that we do, to do things purposefully and to understand who we are. Our actions and reactions are mirrors of us--givers, takers, etc. Introspection becomes the order of the day to ensure purposeful action. Any act that we do should not be dependent upon what we receive--there should be a mission for all actions where selfishness is smothered and the mission becomes most important. Any mission that one understands should be determined by introspection and not greed and self-aggrandizement.
"As I go through life, I will continue to consider life as a 'brook' and I will be careful to bring purpose to bear on more of my actions." Francine Angel, Masters in Divinity, New York
"In a narrative that could be ripped from the pages of any American life, Prem Chopra offers a lasting lesson in how to live life purposefully. With our harried lives often lacking thoughtfulness, perspective or true meaning, this is wisdom that could not come at a better time. With clear, forceful writing, Chopra makes absorbing timeless Indian wisdom as easy as reading the latest novel." Usha Lee McFarling, Journalist, Los Angeles, CA.
Excerpt
By now, Pete was totally engrossed in what Joe was saying. He had forgotten about the manuscript and the list of questions he had brought. Yet, he asked many questions that Joe answered willingly in a simple and straightforward way. Joe described life in terms of flowing water.
"Just as the flow of water constitutes the river, the flow of thoughts constitutes the mind.
“The flow of actions constitutes life.
“Without the flow of water, there is no river.
“Without the flow of thoughts, there is no mind.
“Without the flow of actions, there is no life."
Pete's mind was calm as he paused to absorb the meaning of what he had heard. Joe sensed this. For the next few moments, they listened silently to the sounds of water and the rustling of leaves as the breeze gently caressed them on its way across the mountain. Occasionally, a bird sang out. Time appeared to stand still. Pete felt completely connected with Joe and their surroundings. It felt as if beauty and wisdom enveloped him. In this peace and serenity, he wondered.
“Is this how it feels in the presence of a sage?”
Moments later, which could have been ages, he surfaced from the depths and looked squarely into Joe's smiling eyes. Then, with utmost sincerity bordering on appeal, he asked. "How can the Brook help me find the purpose of life? How can I find happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment?"
