Akbar leaned in, pointing for emphasis. “With the mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, someone convicted of selling five grams of crack gets the same time as somebody selling five-hundred grams of powdered coke.”
“Damn, that’s a one hundred-to-one ratio,” Paul responded.
“You hear me now?” Akbar replied. “These people are getting the same time as murderers. The only way to avoid the mandatory sentences is to be a snitch. So our community is full of informants desperate to rat anybody out.”
“There weren’t any drugs at the club. Who would say that? Don’t they need proof?” Candace asked.
“Look, my sister. Some of these people are facing life sentences for drugs. There is so much pressure to snitch that a lot of them just make up accusations against people to reduce their time. Get two people to agree on the same thing and you got a charge.”
Paul added, “Also, it’s prestigious and profitable for the agencies to convict people—guilty or not.”
