A few minutes passed before it became obvious that the two Scots vessels were not slowing down but were steering to each side of the Silver Sprite. The ships were close enough now for the Englishmen to see that the nearsides of the Scots ships were populated with strangely garbed men – not sailors obviously. Wooton acted too late to prepare his vessel for what was about to happen. As the two Scots ships passed, with the English ship between them, the decks of the Sprite were raked with musket, pistol, and cannon fire from the strange Scots. The cannon fire did not comprise of ball shot. The air was filled with buzzing, flying, iron nails, an idea put forward by Alex from his time of training with John Dearing. The English crew fell like skittles, shattered by the viciousness of the attack. Wooton himself felt a piece of metal strike his cheek and the blood from the gash oozed down his face. He was stunned. He needed to raise the sails and manoeuvre quickly but had insufficient men to handle the craft. The few men left unwounded looked to their captain for orders and found none. All this was beyond his ken.
