Do you know your neighbors? Do you speak to the mail delivery person, the bus driver, the cashier, like they are real people?
If you do, you are a rare bird. Most people ignore each other much of the time. Stop doing that!

One of the most embarrassing times for me was applying for a job and being stumped at the part where they want a list of 3 personal references. They didn’t want co-workers or relatives. I had only neighbors to list.
How did I get into this situation? As an adult I should have been able to list a few friends. The answer is that I had not made any effort to keep in touch with friends that I once had. Moving around the country, changing jobs, and marrying are no excuse for not reaching out to once good friends.
Aside from the friends that I had lost touch with there was one other thing that I didn’t do. I didn’t network properly at my previous jobs. We all work with many people, some closely, most casually. We come in contact with many people in our lives and should be building a personal contact list.
When you are looking for work that contact list becomes a gold mine. You can call them up and chat and let them know that you are looking for work. If you have done the networking properly while working with them, they will gladly do what they can to help. Often your new job will come from one of these contacts.
