The smell of dust, manure and soap hovered in the still air of the Texas Panhandle early morning. A sense of subdued industry, of long-established work habits invaded the Clendenen homestead where the unpainted house and barns, the dry, bare yard, described their owner's bent away from the non-essential things of life. There were no flowers in the yard, not even a fence around the house to distinguish the boundary between the wild prairie and the domesticated plot of land. The two melded together in uneasy agreement with the prairie holding sway.
