Charlie Rock comes to Louisiana to help his conservation minded aunt harvest some trees from her four hundred acre tract of virgin pines. He enlists the services of a black logger who uses horses to haul the trees. This does not destroy the land like conventional logging operations. The horses are killed by a crazed madman trying to get the trees for his own profit, and the killing soon escalates to people. Suspense builds as the story unfolds and the bad guys are finally stopped... for awhile. Then a brother of one of the victims returns for revenge and the killing starts again. The characters are as real as life itself. You won't want to put this one down.

The barn was pleasant, a nice place, a man's place. Time spent here would be of great value to some, not unlike time spent in church. There were dust particles fluttering around in the sun rays which had worked their way through the cracks in the walls. A horse made a sound that only a horse can make. Single trees, bridles and other leathers were hung in neat order along side the horse stalls. The smell was not unpleasant... fresh hay and ground oats, with a hint of manure thrown in.
