I wanted Sandra, Cleo or Jewel to write this foreword. I tracked them down, hounded them, but could not sync it up. I finally surrendered to what Spirit was saying once again. Write your words, Ta’Shia. Just write your words….
Tapestries of Faith was born from a community dialogue that took place at Jewel’s Catch One after a round table discussion about the movie For Colored Girls, in November of 2010. The event was hosted by In the Meantime Men and facilitated by myself & Rev. Freda Lanoix. I will never forget the pain or the resilience in that room. There was much reflection on the fact that while Tyler Perry’s movie was one of the most accurate screen depictions of the challenges faced by Black women and Black SGL men, the beauty, power and talent of Black SGLBT people was not captured. We accepted what we already knew, if we wanted the world to know the rich fullness of our life expressions, we would have to present it ourselves.
When Jeffrey King announced to the group that an anthology would be a great start to this task and charged me with getting it done, I gasped for just a minute. But knowing how Spirit moves in and through my friend Jeffrey I accepted the task and got busy making it happen. Azaan Kamau, publisher and editor-in-chief of Glover Lane Press graciously agreed to part the seas of her overwhelming schedule to publish this anthology. Some seven months later, we give you, Tapestries of Faith….
The voices in this anthology represent a wide variety of ages, cultural and gender identities and expressions of Blackness. In reviewing the many submissions we received from across the globe, I was moved, sometimes to tears. Subsequently, I was also tickled pink that we Black SGLBT folks are some of the baddest, most prolific writers, poets and story tellers in the world. May the powerful fabric of this anthology reach, teach, heal, uplift, inspire and empower all who read it. To those who would seek to silence these voices, this is to let you know, we are and have always been here and we aren’t going anywhere. You might as well love us because the bottom line is, WE ARE YOU. Fierce. Black. Fabulous. Same Gender Loving. Our history will never be erased.
