At four o'clock, I drive through the Kisatchie to Bayou Pierre. The five districts of the Kisatchie National Forest are located in the center of Louisiana. The Kisatchie Ranger District, where the victims were found, is south of Natchitoches. From LA 119 I can see strips of yellow crime scene tape still hanging from a cluster of bald cypress trees about thirty yards from the road. I'm not prepared for swamp wading so I make my observations from dry ground. The descending sun to the west casts eerie reflections on the swamp making the cypress trees look taller than their customrary hundred feet. Although cypress trees aren't unknown on the East coast, these are ancient trees that, at eye level, resemble the legs of giant elephants standing in shallow swamp water.
