Poetry of life and love, and observation of the world around us; with a Greek thread woven throughout: semi-classical, often simple, contemporary.

SOME...

the quiet
ones
are those
who bear their wisdom
like a shell --
neither arrogant
nor easy...

with a hard
look,
that shows
how carefully
they have learned
to guard themselves
... what they know.

     *          *

From Germany to California, with stops in Paris, Turkey, and Greece, these poems are a collection of the yearnings within us all -- questions asked, answers given, and much that never will.

Still, that love and loss are the greatest gifts, the deepest sorrows one can ever know. And who can say what God is -- if finding Him, we are both shattered and fulfilled?

May it be that there is no final "after"... that there may always be something wonderful, rising from the "deep" within.

                              *                    *                    *

When one loves too intensely, the vulnerability is ever there for disaster. We are so fragile, so weak; yet stronger than imagined when tested. One hopes that day will never come -- yet come it will. And always we are unprepared. But life was not meant to be lived on eggshells. Strength is most often gained from failure.

These poems run the range of simple observation to the shattered real of personal confession... tracing the evolution not only of history and all it implies, but to the progress and confrontations we must ever acknowledge within ourselves and regarding others. As an old adage implies: win or lose, the game must be played, and hopefully we may dance well. Though life is far from a game. Yet the prizes are many, and the losses varied. As much as one can, we must ever seek to value the ride.

The best!!! By lb on October 9, 2012 Format: Paperback
Richard Atwood truly brings meaning to the phrase "as pure as poetry". If one doesn't read the title of some of his poetry, such as "Fever", or "Garden", one would think he is passionately describing a lustful soliloquy between poetry and nature and the imprisonment that binds them immortally. Reading this compilation is experiencing, dare I say, mundane life through poetry on a non-dimensional, or an effervescing plane of realism romantically expressed through the written word; it's explosive. I actually read the poems silently, then reread them out loud for power and then a third time silently for intimacy. He stands among the greats.

Recalling Mahler By Grady Harp HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on November 23, 2010 Format: Paperback
There are many connections between Richard Atwood's book of poems HOW DEEP THE PAIN GOES QUIET, AFTER and Gustav Mahler's song cycle 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' ('Songs of a Wayfarer'). Not that readers will equate Atwood and Mahler, but reading these poems is not unlike the feeling of hearing the poetry of Mahler's setting. These poems, unlike Atwood's other book of poems YOU, MY LOVE, are less intensely internalized emotions than they are emotions and thoughts to be shared. Instead of focusing on a love affair aborted by the passage of time, this time Atwood shares glimpses of his responses to nature, to people, to concepts (that yes, include love), to the spiritual side of the spinning of the universe. Some are eloquent pictures of places painted in well chosen words:

REMEMBERING EASTERN AUTUMN

Leaves...I feel them dying in the air
- in the city, I cannot see them.
Not here, in the plain of California sun.

My whole being laments to risk their touch
...stretch wide my hands to the sky,
breathe richly of the appled air.

(It would seem I should not be here)
...thinking back in Pennsylvania:
the Halloween season, the smoky shadows
of orange hills. turning pale...
brisk as the dry, yellowed corn
fields...the stalks still standing

(tired soldiers in their golden tatters)
proud and tall by day - by night to whisper
ghostly, with memory and the last of the green...
beneath the high, dark low of the clouds
...the rustle of a cold, silver moon.

And Atwood can extend his personal responses to the universal ones as in:

THE WANDERER

As if I had been holding Odyssey
alone - the weight of marble
forever heavy upon my back...
