“Ouch,” said Ali. “I’ve just been bitten.”
“Was it a fish?” asked Mel.
“Don’t know,” replied Ali staring hard into the water. Keeping still they
looked in the settling water for any sign of a fish but there were none
around. They swam for the shore and Ali stumbled onto the beach.
“What’s wrong?” shouted Masood.
“Ali has been bitten,” shouted back Mel.
Cindy, Masood and the driver rushed to see what was wrong. They
looked at Ali’s ankle and there were four tiny wounds.
“Oh mother of God!! It is a sea snake bite and they can be deadly. We
have to get him to the hospital quickly,” urged the driver. Masood picked
up Ali like a child. He was already looking very sickly. His skin was greying
and cold to the touch as they rushed to the limo.
“Go! Just go,” shouted Masood at the panicked driver.
“Don’t worry about what we’ve left behind I will cover the cost, if my
friend dies I will kill you anyway,” threatened Masood.
Mel sat at the far end of a long seat and Ali was laid along the seat with
his head on her lap as they sped back to Dubai.
“Do you have a phone or radio in the car?” Masood asked. The driver
nodded and passed Masood a handset. He dialed a number.
“I am Masood Jaleel and I want a police escort now,” he roared down
the phone then gave the handset to the driver.
“Tell them where we are,” he shouted.
The terrified driver screamed their location into the handset. It was
only minutes, but it seemed like forever. Soon the car was bracketed by
three speeding police cars, with sirens wailing and blue lights flashing. They
roared along the road like four racing cars, dust from the side of the road

choking the air, and blinding all the cars and trucks as they passed. Traffic
at roundabouts had been stopped to clear their passage.
“Shit! Look at his leg,” screeched Cindy clasping her hands to her already
drained face.
Ali’s leg was swelling as they watched. How could skin stretch like that
she thought. It was already three times its normal size and still swelling.
Thankfully, Ali had passed out with the pain. Mel looked down at his face
on her lap and in that moment, knew the answer to Ali’s question. She
loved this little man and although she had never prayed in her life before,
she silently prayed now.
