(Inside the old man's hut, he hobbles on bowed legs to the tapestry hanging on the wall and shines the candle on it. Karena gasps--it is magnificent!If she could learn to weave like this,perhaps that would be a great deed and could earn her crown. . .)
"Good sir, could you teach me to weave like this?"
"First you help me."
"How?"
"I need green ropes that sway up. I need ruby tears from faceless maidens. I need blue gems that ooze water. I need purple mist that rises from high snows."
Karena just stared into the old man's cloudy, gray eyes. Was he crazy? And then she thought of her missing brother. What would Jovan do? She knew: he would help the old man.
"Very well, I will come once a week and do whatever you ask, but sir, I don't know where to find such things."
The old man shuffled to a tall clay vase and pried off the lid. His crooked fingers took out another tapestry, and he handed it to her. Marveling, she unrolled it. It far surpassed the first in beauty and detail and color! Reverently, Karena ran her fingers over the designs. Woven in rich black threads was a riddle. . .
