Prologue
Flames shot in quivering spikes high against the bleak darkness. Heat surged over Dana in an oppressive mountain of heat that threatened to smother her.
Run. You have to run. The engine’s going to explode. Hurry.
The words hammered hard inside her head.
But what about Clifton? What about the other men?
Heart pounding, blood rushing, she turned and struggled back toward the broken fuselage of the scattered aircraft. Hot liquid rolled down the side of her cheek. Scalding air simmered all around her.
Her head felt like a metal cap was crushing down on it, but Dana could do nothing to stop the pain. Instinct told her to gulp in fresh air, but there was nothing to breathe but molten, fuel-scented air. For protection she grabbed the bottom of her shirt and pulled it up to cover her face.
She had to hurry.
If she didn’t it would be too late for all of them. She knew that, but she was crawling now. How could she inch along so slowly and still reach them in time? But that was the only way for her to get there. She struggled through the hot fluid that now seeped up from the pores of the jungle.
The trees rose into a tall, thick canopy in this strange impure blackness. It was that canopy which broke the fall of the little airplane as it plummeted from the sky.
One wing hung high above her caressed in the air by giant vines and tree limbs. What kind of tree grew so tall and thick? Her thoughts rushed in crazy directions. What was wrong with her?
She didn’t have time to think.
She had to hurry.
Where was Clifton? Where were the other men? Her thoughts muddled, she couldn’t remember if they were even in the plane.
“Clifton!” She managed a loud cry into the heat and flames.
How much time did she have to find her way into the inferno to rescue him? She knew the plane enveloped in heat and flames would explode. When?
