Broken Promises
He told me that I could be myself
that he didn't like fake women
he wanted me to keep it real
so I allowed myself to be
I shared my dreams, insecurities, fears, disappointments,
and most of all myself,
He told me I was special
He saw a grateful woman in me
he told me that I had so much potential
he wanted me to be his woman
no matter how dysfunctional my past
it had led me into what was now
my uncertain future, yet he said
he would be there
He looked into my eyes
and said that he respected me
all the hurt and pain I had been
through would end now that he was in my life
He said he admired the way
I kept working toward my goals
and dreams no matter what obstacle was
set before me
somehow my focused changed
I only longed for his approval
I lost myself in him because he believed in my dreams
I thought only of ways to please him
My insecurities turned out to be feelings that were true
I had somehow thrown myself into another dysfunctional situation but I wanted him
I only thought of all the intimate things we had shared; how much I wanted him to see that I was the one
Somehow things will make themselves clear
no matter how much denial we are in
I allowed him to promise me a dream,
yet he delivered me a nightmare.
