Sebring’s “Newfie” has done it again! Newfoundlander Lorraine Lynch Geiger has published another delightful children’s book. Just off the press is the colorful hardback “Wild and Woolly Night”.
This fast moving story revealing a mysterious parade of animals may be read at a galloping pace for older children and promotes parent/child bonding as it creates suspense on every page. It offers opportunities for the child to ask questions about animal habits and habitats.
Read at a slo-o-o-wer pace in the comfort of loving arms or tucked into blankets its repetition can easily induce drowsiness.
The book is a well-written fantasy, in verse and humor, about a small boy trying to fall asleep. He is kept awake by an assortment of cuddly critters moving about on his stash of bedspreads. It is designed for ages four through twelve.
Sharon Vargo, an author and illustrator, has added magic to the cover and pages with her friendly little critter images.
Geiger grew up in Newfoundland, left a teaching career, moved to Florida when she married an American and has raised five children in Sebring. Besides writing books she is a published poet. Geiger and her husband operate a national sales business via the Internet.

A KID’S FAVORITE: “A WILD AND WOOLLY NIGHT”


Once in awhile a book comes across my desk that I can hardly wait to tell the Bookworm readers about. And this has happened. Florida author, Lorraine Lynch Geiger and Indiana illustrator, Sharon Vargo, have teamed together for a deliciously different book for children of all ages, “A Wild and Woolly Night.”

The imaginative jacket of the book has the reader immediately hooked. It shows a little boy holding a smiling cat and surrounded by a giggling frog, a curious giraffe, a warm and fuzzy bear and a dancing starfish. The little boy’s name is Phillip and unlike most children he wants to go to bed and to sleep, but…there is something going on in his room that is both curious and funny. The entire story and Phillip and his go-to-bed adventure is in rhyme. It goes something like this (you may start laughing…)

When Phillip made his bed one day with stars of blue and white,
He found that he could hardly wait to climb in bed that night.

Every page leads to another delightful discovery such as:
“He found a purple spread with tiny pollywogs. But when he climbed back into bed, they all grew into frogs.” Phillip dashes to the closet and pulls out another spread and soon discovers each spread brings new creatures. There are porcupines with sharp, pointy quills, a playful otter with piles of kelp, swinging chimpanzees, bouncing zebras, and prancing pink flamingoes. The illustrations combined with the story-rhymes makes this tale a real page-turner.
