It seemed to get dark earlier and earlier, she thought. The village streets seemed to be deserted, although they were well lit. It had started to rain while she was inside. West Broadway was a block away once she turned the corner onto Broome. She could see the cars as they went whooshing by on the wet street ahead of her. The city blocks seemed to stretch on for miles when it was wet and cold out.
Coco stopped in the middle of the sidewalk to pull her coat closed and steady her umbrella against the menacing wind while unable to dispel the feeling that she was being watched. She turned quickly at the sound of footsteps behind her – but saw nothing. She shook her head and chuckled to herself over her own susceptibility to suggestion as she walked further up the block. She had walked this block many times, although never at night, and she noticed that it had an unusually higher number of homeless bodies scattered sparingly on both sides of the street. She moved closer to the curb to avoid a group of homeless people who had set up camp in front of a seemingly abandoned building. She couldn’t believe how paranoid she had been since JAG’s reappearance.
What was that? She spun around quickly to see nothing. Calm down, she told herself. No one in their right mind would try anything with all those people and all that traffic ahead. Then it occurred to her that it wasn’t people in their right mind that she had to be worried about. But, she always had her key chain with her tube of pepper spray handy and ready for action. But from now on she would make sure that all of her future appointments with Dr. Jenkins be made earlier in the afternoon.
She felt a little more relaxed when she crossed Broadway and looked up and saw her car. She let out a relieved sigh and started to chuckle at herself again as she fitted her key into the lock. Then she choked on the chuckle as a hard hand clamped over her mouth and another around her waist and dragged her backward.
She struggled frantically against whoever held her. She shouted horrifyingly behind the hand that gripped her mouth. Fighting for all she was worth, she managed to break away. She screamed for help, feeling like her heart was trying to beat through her rib cage, as a long arm reached out to catch her and pulled her back.
