Frank Somers is a timid fourteen-year-old middle school student who is persecuted by his peers. Despite his misfortune, he befriends a classmate. Following an accident, Frank lies in a coma for two and a half days. His parents and friends see him lying in a hospital bed with an I.V. in his arm, connected to machines that monitor his vital signs. From his perspective, he is in Las Vegas, and ten years older. The concept of time is juxtaposed in a very bizarre,anachronistic fashion. A gorgeous redhead and a U.S. President who has been dead for over a century guide Frank back to his present life. Having witnessed a world seen by few, he emerges from his coma with a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence.
EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER ONE:
In a bold but apprehensive move, Frank slowly began to slide his desk toward Kelly's. They seemed to be including him in the conversation now, which had something to do with the other girl's brother releasing a well-executed fart in a restaurant where their family had gone out to eat last night. While Rick was still trying to memorize some atomic symbols, Frank continued to inch his desk closer to Kelly's. Suddenly, Kelly caught on to what Frank was attempting to do, and said, "Are you trying to move closer to me? Get away before you make me vomit!"
EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER FIFTEEN:
"Your son has suffered some head trauma. He has a large concussion on the part of the brain that controls periods of wakefulness and sleep," he said.
"A concussion? That's a bruise, right?" asked Dave.
Mary grasped his hand and squeezed tightly.
"Yes. Basically, he's bleeding internally. The bruise is about the size of a half-dollar coin, which doesn't seem large, but is considered quite significant given its location," he continued.
"When will he wake up?" asked Mary, with obvious concern.
Dr. Lake answered, "Well, that's difficult to ascertain. In theory, as the bruise heals, and begins to mend itself, he will in turn begin to regain consciousness. At first, it will be slowly, and he could drift back and forth between sleep and being awake for brief periods of time. It's too early to tell when he will completely wake up. It could be a few hours, a couple of days, or several weeks."
Upon hearing this, Mary squeezed Dave's hand even tighter. It hurt as if he were being tortured by a sadistic carpenter with a vise at his disposal.

Silent Sanctuary is the story of a boy and how a single incident affected his life. After a motorcycle accident, the boy ventures into worlds unknown and has experiences that change his life. In an effort to save the suspense and not reveal too much, that’s all I’ll say about the plot.
The book is well written and flows smoothly. The characters have depth and the plot is unique and entertaining. The “events” are integrated into the story very well and give the readers a sense of believability. The book is less a suspense novel (although there are suspenseful moments) as it is a coming-of-age story. Through reality to the supernatural, the story and sub-stories are woven like a quality quilt. As the story flips back and forth from our “reality” to a “supernatural” reality, the chapters are well laid out and are reminiscent of a James Patterson style of writing.
I found this novel amusing at times, dramatic throughout, and, ultimately a great read. You could do a lot worse.
