May 12: At midnight, Red Knot crosses the equator. The stars and the Earth’s magnetic forces help keep her on course.
May 13: Rain and winds beat against Red Knot. Her small wings pumping hard, she rises 10,000 feet above the storm to clear skies.
May 14: Exhausted, Red Knot’s body fat is gone. Her body now must burn muscle for energy to keep her aloft.

Every year, Red Knots make several long distance flights on their 20,000-mile migration from the tip of South America to their Arctic Circle nesting grounds. Their most critical stop is in Delaware Bay, where they fatten up on horseshoe crab eggs before making the last flight to the Arctic. In the last decade, over-harvesting of horseshoe crabs for bait in conch and eel traps has caused the Red Knot population to plummet. In August, 2005, National Audubon and other wildlife organizations petitioned for emergency protection of Red Knots under the Endangered Species Act. Some scientists predict their extinction by the year 2010.
