The preacher woke to a heavy smell that burned his throat. He sat up to find the boy staring out the window into the front yard. It startled him. The boy looked like a ghost in a dream.
"Boy?" he asked in a waivering voice.
The boy turned an expressionless face to him. The moonlight spilling in the window cast a strange glow around the boy.
"Mother's dead," the boy said in a flat cadence.
"Dead?" The preacher asked unsure if he was dreaming or not.
"Where do you think she will sleep tonight, Father?"
"God will judge that."
"And you have faith in that?" the boy's small voice asked.
"I do. God will judge us all."
"Will he judge me?" the boy asked.
"Boy, what are you talking about?" the precher asked in a raspy cough.
A sudden orange spark splashed light on the boy's face revealing the mournful look in his eyes. The preacher recognized the smell of sulfur a second before he recognized the potent odor that had awakened him in the first place. He looked around the room, unsure of himself. His mind was too drowsy to fully recognize the canister sitting by the bedroom door when his eyes fell on it.
The boy turned with the match flickering in his hand.
"Father, where will you sleep tonight?"
The preacher had enough time to scream before the match fell from the boy's hand. The gasoline ignighted with a low growl, and the bed became an instant bonfire. The boy closed the door behind himself as he left the room.
