Turning on East 80th Street, they observed flashing lights on various emergency vehicles. Yellow tape cordoned off about a 250 square foot area. A body was lying face up, blackened from fire. Steam was emanating from the body. Mouth open, beard singed, and hair burned down. Some flesh was visible, crusted with cloth sticking to it. A sweet stench lingered near the body and it reminded Pavlick of the "rib-cook off on the mall. As usually at scenes like these, errant comments were made. One police officer asked, "Anyone bring the barbecue sauce?" Another said, "Probably playing german and jew." While a third officer commented, "Looks like Internal Affairs grilled another suspect."
In reality, these comments are self-protective mechanisim used to blunt the effests of horrific sights and situations that the average police officer comes across. These actions gives a real meaning to the cliche "Laughing on the outside while crying on the inside."
