The Red River Valley is the setting for a rustic log cabin, home to a family with a small boy and one lazy dog. The valley is thick with forest and teaming with wildlife. One hot summer day, a young buck appears on the farm after escaping a wildfire. He wonders upon some sweet corn and slowly bonds with the family. The deer is fascinated by the colorful quilts draped across the clothesline to air. He desperately craves the warmth that he felt when his mother tucked him into her body. He believes the quilts could provide that warmth. If only someone would become aware of his yearnings. Possibly some observant person will in I'll Tuck You in, Deer.

"I'll Tuck You in, Deer" is a children's picture book intended for children ages 4 to 8. The sentimental story with an ultimately good ending will be a great bedtime story for parents or grandparents to read to children. Simple words and colorful pictures hold a child’s attention and make it ideal for an early reader.

The deer has lost his family and becomes an adopted pet by a new family made up of a man, woman, little boy,
and one lazy dog. The woman likes to make quilts and the deer becomes fascinated with the ritual of being
tucked in by a quilt. This allows you to explain to your child this ritual, as you read about the little boy in the story being tucked in by his parents. The story discusses the development of loving relationships, especially the man’s relationship with his wife, son, dog and now the deer. Life on a tranquil farm is beautifully illustrated showing the forest, wildlife, livestock, domestic animals, and the fishing pond.

Excerpt

When the weather was nippy, the man covered the boy and dog with their quilts.

The deer also wanted to be covered and tucked in.

Sometimes, the deer tried to tuck himself in. He took a corner of the quilt in his teeth and flapped it up into the air. It might land over part of his body, but it never completely covered him.

Lying on the quilt was not the same as being tucked in, the deer thought.

He remembered how his mother wrapped her body around his until he was snuggly warm. It had been such a long time since he felt a mother’s touch.

I'll Tuck You in, Deer
Short Synopsis of the story: ‘I’ll Tuck You In, Deer’ is a tale about a deer who has wondered onto a family’s property after being forcibly separated from his mother because of a wildfire. The family consists of mom, dad, a boy and a lazy dog. Don’t forget the lazy dog! When the man decides to befriend the deer he puts out some corn for the deer to find and eat. The deer finds it and also finds the family’s pond and house interesting. The deer was very inquisitive and found the mother’s quilts one day. Accidentally he tears one and the father uses it for the deer after that. Later the mother makes a quilt especially for the deer, amongst other friendly gestures from the family to the deer and the deer reciprocating some friendly gestures of his own. This is a quaint little tale of a love for deer.

REVIEW - Please describe what you thought of the book: ‘I’ll Tuck You In, Deer’ is a quaint little tale of love for wildlife and the unexpected uniting of a deer and a family. Authors April Robins, Celeste Robins and Ruby Robins put this little story of a lost deer and a family into an endearing tale that children will love. This book is a slower paced book than their others as it is a bedtime story for children which will induce slumber while they are trying to sleep. I highly recommend this as a bedtime story for children.
