He began to shuffle papers as if the judgment was a certainty. Now he was looking down at the defendant with an expression of extreme dissatisfaction. "Then by the power vested in me by the federal government, I hereby sentence you to hang by the neck until you are dead, dead, dead!" the judge said, bringing the gavel down with a final force. He looked up and immediately dismissed this breaker of criminal laws as if it a duty to be done and he had done it.
