Neither of them said anything for a few minutes. Rob drank his coffee, savoring the ability to do so. Phil paced around the kitchen as if trying to find an escape route. Both of them whirled around when the front door opened.
“You two are sure jumpy,” Ellis said. “It’s only me. Who were you expecting?”
“The Lone Ranger on a bicycle,” Phil said. “With a lasso.”
“What?”
“Look at Rob’s neck.”
Ellis looked. “What the hell happened to you?”
“Like I said,” Phil said. “The Lone Ranger on a bicycle attacked Rob last night and lassoed him. The cops think it was a Halloween prank. We don’t.”
“Of course not.” Ellis frowned. After a moment’s thought, he said, “I suppose he knew you wouldn’t have a lake handy for him to push you into. At least I’m supposing there aren’t two homicidal bicyclists around and this is the same guy who tried to drown Michael Ryan.”
“You know,” Rob said, “I’m really, really glad to hear you say that, Ellis. I lay awake most of last night thinking there must a connection between the two things and telling myself I was being ridiculous. But you’ve taken less than a minute to come up with the same theory.”
“Well, the alternatives are even more outlandish. What does it mean, though?”
“I think it means,” Rob said, “that we’re going to have to find out – somehow – what it was that Michael Ryan is insisting he didn’t see.”
