When Cheyenne middle-school student Danny Wind gets in trouble both in school and at home, his mother sends him back to his uncle on the Cheyenne reservation in Montana to reacquaint him with tribal culture.
The first book in the new teen Pathfinders book series from 7th Generation Books, Thunder on the Plains takes young readers from a school in Los Angeles to the remote plains of a Montana reservation. Under his uncle's supervision, Danny Wind must learn to function in an unfamiliar rural American Indian setting. During his summer adventure, he and a group of other Native teens rescue a herd of buffalo destined for slaughter. With the help of his traditional Cheyenn grandfather, Danny successfully navigates the challenges and perils he faces in his journey of self-discovery.

"Get on the phone and call them all to a meeting next Saturday," Danny said to his cousin, Crow. "We're going to rescue us some buffalo!" He could hardly believe what he was saying. "But don't tell anyone else," he continued. "It's our little secret for now."
