“Lou, I know how these things work,” Zukie said. “She was trying to drive a wedge between Jimmy and his kids and what’s more, she probably killed him.”
“We don’t know that. He was a lonely old guy. Maybe she cheered him up.”
Zukie turned a volcanic gaze on him, but Lou added calmly, “I don’t necessarily mean sex. She might have kept him company. His kids didn’t go over very often and a lot of his old friends had died.”
“Well, if you think she’s so great, maybe you should …” She stopped. “Hey.”
“No.”
“It could work.”
“No.”
Zukie spooned the sauce over the sliced potatoes and slid the dish into the oven.
“Of course, we don’t even know where to find her, so that’s a little bit of a problem.”
“I don’t care if she turns up on the front porch here begging me to ravish her. Still no.”
“Lou, you have no sense of adventure.”
“The hell I don’t. I live here with you, don’t I?”
