When all the other fairies suddenly vanish, leaving no trace behind, Lilly is forced to face her past and confront an unseen evil. If she is to triumph, she will need to draw on all her skills, as well as a rare magic hidden deep within. Only then can she rescue the fairies, destroy evil and restore the kingdom.

Excerpt

The dragonfly’s big red eyes looked at the little black fairy with a curious gaze. She could see herself reflected in the large bright discs. The dragonfly lifted a foot and scratched the side of its head and then brushed it over its wings. It appeared to be waiting for something. The little black fairy stepped forward and picked up the piece of reed. The dragonfly was nodding its head as if to tell her she needed to do something with it. She looked over at the acorn lid and noticed two small holes in each side of it. She looked up at the magnificent eyes and the dragonfly buzzed at her expectantly.

She didn’t know why, but she was starting to understand what it was the dragonfly was telling her to do. Without thinking much about it, she threaded the reed through the holes and tied each length, making a strap over the open end of the acorn.

It was then that the dragonfly did something truly amazing. It knelt down and tilting its head to one side, touched a shoulder to the ground and then waited. The little black fairy did not hesitate. Recognizing the invitation, she stepped up onto the shoulders of the dragonfly, dragging the acorn lid behind her. On the dragonfly’s back were two bony protrusions. She tied each end of the leathery strap to the two bones and slipped into the upturned acorn lid. The Dragonfly took off and before she knew it, the little fairy was high up in the air.

As everybody who is anybody knows, fairies can fly very well only over short distances, but they rarely fly higher than the tree canopy of the forest. When fairies fly, they get tired very easily and if they are not careful, they can use up all their energy and flop back to the ground with a thud. But dragonflies can fly over very long distances and never appear to get tired.

Behind her, the fairy heard the sounds and songs of the fairy kingdom fade away until she could hear them no more. She did not know whether to feel homesick or even if she ever would. In truth, she was so excited to be riding on the dragonfly, she did not think too much about home at all.

The dragonfly took her high above the tallest trees. Ahead of her she could see the top of the forest stretch ahead a very long way; so far in fact that she could almost see the very edge of the forest. In the distance, the mountains appeared as giants guarding the edge of the world. The little black fairy wondered if that was where they were heading. While she was wondering that, the dragonfly did a slow and graceful turn, stopping the beating of its wings and gliding for a moment so that all the fairy heard was the whooshing of the air as it swept over the giant insect and then over her own body and wings.

They were now heading in the opposite direction, out towards the great ocean. As they passed over the fairy Kingdom at a great height one last time, the flowery village seemed so small and insignificant. Out ahead of them, she could see the vast blue sea, sprawling out to the left and to the right, filling the horizon. Beyond it there was nothing but sky.

Fantastic Fairy Story
I first read the eBook “Star Child, the cosmic birth” by Paul Day. Since l loved it very much and liked his writing and style and the second book is not out yet, I bought, a kindle version as well, and started to read “The Black Fairy and the Dragonfly”.

As much as I loved the Star Child, I loved that one. Magical black Fairy and her best friends the dragonflies.

Since she was born as a black Fairy, she was not welcome in the Fairy Kingdom and was not given a name. And when her parents died, she was an outcast. But shortly after she made friends with Dragonflies and they invited her to come to their Kingdome. Spending time there and they giving her the name Lilly, she suddenly encountered strange dreams, dreams... well, I will stop here, because I really don’t want to spoil the amazing and great story about the black Fairy.

I really can’t wait to read on, the second book in the series, “The Black Fairy and the Dragonfly: Escape from the Dark Queen”.

I recommend that book, not only for children, for older and the young at heart, as I am one of them.

Thank you Paul for a great and magical story.

Of Dragonflies and an Unusual Story
If you've spent any time at all around a pond in the summer, you've seen them. The dragonflies. Madly flitting about, they're the kamikazes of the insect kingdom. In this book, they're also a kindly race (whose language sounds like a charming cross between Yoda and Mr. Rogers), happy to adopt a young fairy who has been ejected from her community, just because she's a bit out of the ordinary.

Lilly, as she's eventually named by the dragonflies, is happy with them until she dreams the other fairies are in danger. When she decides to return home, three dragonflies accompany her, and their adventure begins. Ahead of Lilly are a long journey, mysterious powers for her to overcome, and an evil Queen. This is the first part of a trilogy, so be prepared for a cliff-hanger ending.

If you're a fan of George MacDonald's work, or Andrew Lang's rainbow of Fairy Books, you'll enjoy this story. It's perfect for a read-aloud, for listeners ranging from 3 to 7, with short chapters that keep the story moving. The author's descriptions of the power and beauty of nature are a plus. I only wish the author had shown us those marching horned beetles, the Queen of the Locusts, and the Frog Lords.

Entertaining and Beautifully Written
Kudos to Paul G. Day for this enchanting tale of a little black fairy who, rejected by her own kind, finds a home amongst dragonflies. Together with her new friends, Lily the Black Fairy comes to the aid of the fairy village when they face trouble, notwithstanding their history of maltreatment. Entertaining, message-driven and beautifully written.

Stories with good vs evil confrontations that culminate with good triumphant are always enjoyable. The Black Fairy and The Dragonfly: Escape From The Dark Queen, is no different save the fact that this tale is born of an extraordinarily creative imagination that is set free.
Highly recommended.
