He threw another look of longing over at the horse’s stable then bent to lap some water from the trough. He lifted his head up just then to see a Shirley cow staring him in the face. Billy got such a startle, he stumbled backwards and landed legs up inside the trough with a loud whoosh.
The cow shook her head and laughed. She laughed so much her belly rocked from side to side and tears ran from her eyes. ‘Oh you should see yourself.’
Billy thought he would die from the humiliation. He was soaking wet and the bleeding cow just wouldn’t go away.
‘I’m Nancy. Let me help you out of there.’
‘Just go,’ he said. ‘I don’t need help from a silly cow.’
‘Fine,’ Nancy bristled, ‘but you’re the one that’s silly - not me.’
She stalked back to the meadow without so much as a backwards glance. Billy spat water out of his mouth and attempted to haul his big lump out of the trough. But the trough was deep and somehow his tail had gotten wedged in at one side. He heaved and he panted. He twisted and he turned. But there was no use. He was stuck. There was nothing he could do but wait until help came.
