I wrote “Saying Yes to My Life’s Calling: Breakthroughs in Becoming an Educator” to inspire a variety of individuals, amongst them future teachers, school counselors, and principals. I believe that school counselors play a pivotal role in the lives of students. Without a caring high school counselor, I doubt I would have even been able to attend a four-year college. Moreover, principals set the tone for a school. If he or she thinks the color of a child’s skin should determine the kind of education that child should receive, then the rest
of the faculty and staff will follow the guidelines laid out by that principal. My first experience attending an American school was nothing short of pure devastation because the principal at the time held the belief that Negro children are inherently inferior in intelligence to their white counterparts.
In the last part of my book, I wrote about a second calling. I included this section because writing quality books that display diversity is much needed in today’s society. I believe such books can foster cross-cultural understanding at an early age. Research indicates that as many as 75% of whites do not have friends of color, and public schools are quickly “re-segregating,” so the need for more positive portrayals of color is becoming vitally important.
I hope you will join me in the battle to bring more equity to the classroom. Our children’s future depends on it.
