“Girl, are you telling me that graduation is tomorrow and you have not written your speech yet?”
They were at the breakfast table, it was a little over a week since the prom.
Kisa, with a mouth full of food, nodded and chuckled at her aunt across the table.
“Don’t you dare laugh! What have you been doing all this time?!”
“Actually,” she swallowed and took a long drink of juice, “writing my speech.”
“What? But you just said you hadn’t written anything.”
“And I haven’t written anything, but I’ve been thinking and I’ve decided that my speech may be the shortest ever given…but I hope it’s the most meaningful. I’m going to talk from my heart and that’s it…that’s all I can do.”
“Kisa…”
“Well, I told them, Aunt Flora. I told them I am not good with speeches so maybe they needed to let someone else do it. They suggested that I read some of the past valedictorian addresses that were given, but…I don’t want to copy or say what somebody else said, I want it to be real. So they said to do it like I want to and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to get up there and let the words pour out from my heart, “she shrugged her shoulder, “that’s what I’m going to do.”
“Okay…,” Flora said, sipping on her coffee with a nod, “okay.”
