Book 2 of The Sensate Nine Moon Saga - Ryeth's story, where he came from and how the saga began.

Sensates have existed on earth for over two thousand years. They maintain a safe haven in the mountains of Pennsylvania where they hone their abilities away from the prying eyes of those who would use them to their advantage.

Ryeth is the story of a young Sensate’s journey through a life of rage and revenge that lasts for nearly five hundred years. Condemned as a murderer for the deaths of his parents, Ryeth must flee and face the world alone. When his extrasensory powers begin to emerge and he is shunned as ‘not worthy’ by the group of Sensates, he is thrown into a realm of disbelief and awe, only to be found out and tied to a stake as a demon.

Travel with Ryeth as he lives through the pain of loss, learns to use his special gifts, and tastes the nectar of first love.

Excerpt

The bark of the tree felt secure against his back. Ryeth closed his eyes and took a deep, calming breath. “Wise old pawcohiccora,” he asked, “where do I begin?”

“Tell me you weren’t just talking to yourself,” said a soft melodious voice.

Startled from his reverie, Ryeth looked up to see a female jogger on the path next to his tree. Consumed by his thoughts, he had not heard her arrival. The sun shone over her shoulder and blinded his vision.

He squinted up at her and quelled his first instinct to cloud her vision and seek escape, a ruse he had used numerous times in the past to keep his wall of isolation intact. Instead, he gritted his teeth, let out a sigh, and decided to suffer through the inquisition.

“Forgive me. What did you say?” he asked.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude. Just catching my breath. That hill was steeper than I thought.”

She looked around and stepped closer so that her shadow blocked the sun from his eyes. “Were you talking to yourself, or is there someone else here?” she asked.

“Are you always so blunt?” he said. His eyes took in the outline of her form in spandex running pants. He looked up just in time to catch the stiffening of her shoulders from his remark.

“Just trying to figure out whether or not I need to fear a pack of wolves, or just one,” she said, inclining her head.

“You certainly have a high opinion of yourself,” he said, looking at her from beneath partially hooded eyes.

She appeared undaunted by his short quips, and shot back immediately. “I am what I appear to be, a jogger out for a run. You, on the other hand, are leisurely propped against a tree with no backpack or hiking gear in sight and miles from the nearest parking lot. You’re wearing tasseled loafers with not a speck of dust on them, so you haven’t been hiking.” She paused, and then resumed pointedly. “Care to fill in the blanks?”

“No,” he replied. She certainly was an observant intruder; he’d give her that. Dark hair, almost black, was pulled up into a ponytail that exited through the back of a baseball cap. Her cheeks glowed rosy from exertion as her red lips pressed firm. With her eyes hidden beneath designer sunglasses, she posed a slight mystery. When she spoke, she tossed her head in an I-don’t-care-attitude, which caused his mouth to draw up into a barely perceptible smile.

“You would rather be an enigma?” she said.

“Why not?” He shrugged. “No one likes to give away the ending at the beginning of a book.”

“Touché,” she said. “Of course that statement assumes someone is intrigued enough to read the book.”

She bent over to inspect a shoe and retied the lacing. As she stood, she reached for her ponytail, separated the two halves, pulled it tight, and glanced at the ‘book’ in front of her.
“Have a good day, mystery-man.” She turned to start the descent.

“You as well, lady jogger. Beware of wolves.”

She smiled. “Always,” she said over her shoulder as she took off at a nice pace.

Ryeth grinned and congratulated himself regarding the exchange. He had done well, in his estimation, almost as if he had been carrying on conversations for years instead of merely listening to them.

“Pawcohiccora,” he said while resuming his relaxed state next to the huge shagbark hickory, “we have a lot of catching up to do.”
