A man returns from the dead -- or does he?
Strange things are said to happen on Twelfth Night, although few as strange as the ghost of a man believed drowned years earlier appearing in the midst of the town's celebration, vowing revenge on his killers.
The sighting might have been blamed on the potent punch being served, but after two bodies are found, the ghost's threat has to be taken seriously. Old secrets come back to haunt more than one person as clock repairer Jacob Silver and housemaid Sarah Simm help the police follow a trail that leads to killers past and present.
Excerpt
Jacob went back into the kitchen to find the stove glowing, the lamps lit and Sarah spreading his coat out on the table.
“What’s this, Mr Silver?” she asked, pointing to the back.
Jacob had nearly forgotten the missile which had hit him at the Red Lion.
“Someone threw something at me in the pub,” he said. “I daresay it can be cleaned off.”
“I think it was a piece of pork pie.”
“It would be,” Jacob said with a sigh. “Don’t worry about it, Sarah.”
“They play darts in that pub sometimes, so I reckon it could have been worse if they’d decided to use you as the board. People are horrid, aren’t they, sir?”
“They are indeed. A coat can be cleaned or a tear mended, but look at whoever is attacking the Duckett family, and over what? There may never have been a legacy in the first place, just the rumor of one.”
“If there was one,” Sarah said slowly, “and nobody ever got it, I reckon it has something to do with that old house. Maybe old Jonas hid something in there or just told his sons that’s where it was. Otherwise, why would that man have been there? And why else would Peter Duckett have been pretendin’ to be a ghost in that particular part of town? Nothing better than letting it be known a house is haunted to keep nosy people from looking at it too close.”
Jacob just looked at her and she had the grace to blush.
“Nosy like me, I know,” she said. “But doesn’t that make sense?”
“As much as anything does about this whole business,” Jacob said.
