Todd sprung to his feet, and before she knew what he had in mind, his fingers trailed along the sides of the couch toward her body, caging her beneath him. “Weak hybrids, you say? We’re stronger, quicker and I believe smarter than mere humans.”
Linda pushed on his arms, against thick bands of steel. “Never smarter. Oh, I forgot you have the hybrid’s power of hypnosis.”
He growled and pressed her against the cushions, his body poised above hers. “I told you before I never use my power of suggestion on humans. Never have. And never will. Got it?”
Linda gave a quick nod before Todd’s lips descended upon hers. “Let’s see if it works. Love me, Linda. Love me, Linda.”
Todd straightened, leaving her limp on the couch. “Did it work?” He stood with his hands crossed over his chest. “Do you love me?”
She adjusted her white, silk blouse, where buttons had slipped open, and peeked through long eyelashes at him. A smile filled the bottom half of Todd’s face above a perfect cleft chin.
“No, I don’t.”
“See, I was right. I can’t hypnotize anyone.”
She combed fingers through her hair as Todd’s hot gaze followed her movements. “I guess you weren’t trying hard enough.”
“We shall see.”
“What other powers do you have?”
“Hybrids are still human. We live and die as you do. We’re only stronger and live longer.”
“No other powers?”
“No. End of story.”

"Set five years after the events in Leist's (The Dead Game, 2013) previous novel, this sequel aims to expand on the threat of Wolf and explore romance among the vamps. Readers will also enjoy a touch of mystery when they discover that Wolf's spirit has migrated into a new body... The Florida coast is beautifully evoked by water that "shimmered in alternating shades of azure and cerulean blue" and "the scent of zinnias and lavender" that "permeated the gentle wind." Most of the violence isn't the traditional vampire neck biting but more in tune with battlefield carnage ("A body hung from the chandelier--a headless form--still wearing his shirt and pants, now saturated with blood")."

“Prey for the Dead” continues five years after “The Dead Game”. All Linda wanted was love, contentment, and happiness. She left the Big Apple in search of a better way of life. But joy crossing paths with her wasn’t in the cards, due to a wicked gang of vampires that wreak havoc on her life. She seems to never have any serenity. Linda takes comfort in her bookstore. She has to learn to live among vampires. She wasn’t expecting the devastation of a loud blast to hit her store. There’s chaos among the hybrids and vampires, and they end up running for cover. Demise and turmoil shadow them, and they end with a head-to-head in the marshes of Florida. A boundless tale of combat between good and evil. Florida shores are stunningly depicted. An exciting journey. The writing smooth and the story captivating suggests an author who loves her craft.
A HIGH OCTANE THRILLER
I read the first book in the series a few years ago and thought it was dynamite. Susanne does not ease her foot off the gas pedal for this high octane sequel. Placing the vampires in Florida and Disneyworld was a nice touch. The story moves fast with slick action and sharp interaction between the characters, replete with romantic interludes.
“Prey for the Dead” picks up the story five years later. After a period of peace in Oasis between humans, hybrids and vampires, war breaks out again. Susanne has a knack for telling a captivating story that mixes together fantasy and the supernatural.
My memories of vampires date back to Bela Lugosi holding a cape in front of his mouth, and his piercing eyes hypnotically captivating his female prey, as in the classic “Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”
Thankfully, today’s vampires are equipped with a more profuse personality and power.
