Murders similar to those once committed by the now incarcerated Dr. Penderan Fauste begin to occur in New England. The cavalier FBI Special Agent Dalston Lockwood is placed in charge of the investigation but is curiously denied access to Fauste. Riley Wingate, however, now a crime scene specialist, then a student of Dr. Fauste's, seems his perfect solution. As the race to apprehend The Cheshire Cat continues, it becomes increasingly evident to Lockwood that Wingate is being far from forthright regarding her former associations with Dr. Fauste.
