Father Damien is called upon to protect and safeguard members of his community who have sought sanctuary in his church from the German occupation forces.
Colonel Anton Fahn seeks revenge against the underground members who destroyed the vital fuel reserves in France that were entrusted under his protection. He decides to loot all the communities across France and Italy on his way to Bergamo where he had been informed Father Damien resides as the leader of the underground. He convinces his battalion that they have been reassigned to defensive positions in Italy as reinforcements to that area. He ignores his orders to report to Berlin as a call for reprimand that could only have fatal consequences.
