She always provided advice for me,
Which states the obvious for all to see.
I just have to grin and bare it each time
To help keep peace at home and tow the line!
Every Christmas brings chores for me to do
I could list them all in order for you.
We have to buy a tree that’s full and tall
That we place against our living room wall.
Once I bought an artificial tree
To save some frustration and time for me.
Of course the ends did not screw in quit right
It took some time to straighten it that night!
She said:” You could have bought a real one, dear!”
“They don’t need to be screwed together, dear!”
“They stand erect if you get a straight one!”
“Wouldn’t that be a lot less trouble, Hun?”
She always provided advice for me,
Which states the obvious for all to see.
I just have to grin and bare it each time
To keep the peace at home and tow the line!
Well, the next Christmas I used the same tree
To save some frustration and time for me!
Wouldn’t you know I’m missing a layer?
A small piece I had forgot to pack with care.
When it was finished the tree was too small
I placed it on a box against the wall
I spread a sheet down to help conceal it
I thought it looked fine for using my wit!
She said:”if you had packed it away right
You wouldn’t have struggled with it all night
That goes to show that a real one is best
Honey, they seem to beat all of the rest!”
She always provided advice for me,
Which states the obvious for all to see.
I just have to grin and bare it each time
To keep the peace at home and tow the line!
This year I broke down and bought a real one
The shopping mall this time of year’s no fun
I tied it down to the roof of my car
Because I didn’t have to go that far!
I made it safely home that winter night
and checked the tree to see it was alright.
It was missing needles on the flat side
That I will turn against the wall to hide!
She said:” You know you bought one that’s too tall,
Why’s it turned so funny against the wall?
And its limbs up front are touching the floor
Make room for the presents!” then shut the door!
Well I had to trim the limbs from the floor
And cut the trunk to shorten it some more
I finished my chores in time for some rest
And thought you know a real one is the best!
She always provided advice for me
That states the obvious for all to see.
I just grin and bare it each time
To keep the peace at home and tow the line!
Well now it’s time for some decorations
For the holiday’s appreciation!
I pulled out the Christmas lights from the box.
On the fireplace mantel I hung the socks.
I noted that the lights were all tangled
And some of the bulbs were also mangled
And the angel was missing her left wing
And the manger set was missing a king!
As I hung the lights, bulbs and tinsel too
Where there once was three Magi there’s now two
So I placed a lamb in the vacant spot
That is all I could do without much thought!
On top the tree I placed the angel there
I turned on the lights and stood back and stared
It was quite a surprise they all turned on
And just in time for the caroler’s song!
She said:” You know that angel was a gift
From my grandmother her mother had left
And the manger set is missing a king
Oh listen! I hear the carolers sing!”
She always provided advice for me
That states the obvious for all to see.
I just grin and bare it each time
To keep the peace at home and tow the line!
The next evening I hung lights up outside
I didn’t recall the house was this wide
I fastened all the lights to the gutter
and pulled one end tight and then the other!
I placed some lights in the shrubs and small trees
And was ready to turn them on to see
The string of lights failed to come on all right
I checked each bulb by hand throughout the night!
I went up and down the latter to find
All of the burned out bulbs of any kind
I replaced all the bad bulbs on the string
And in the box I found the missing wing!
She said:” You should have checked them before this
Now you had to search for the one you missed
I want to thank you for the angel’s wing
Now all you have to do is find the king!
She always provided advice for me
That states the obvious for all to see.
I just grin and bare it each time
To keep the peace at home and tow the line!
On the other hand, I laughed all the way through at your attempts to please yourself when you should have listened to the boss. I recall my brother telling me that I should "Do everything your wife tells you to do and you'll keep the peace," after his experience with 17 years of marriage. She divorced him the next year.
