The setting of Featherstone in the ancient Southwest, with ships of stone sailing on sand seas is certainly unique, although influenced by others. I grew up near Shiprock, New Mexico and was fascinated by the Navajo legend of this rock as a ship and by other legends in which other rock formations were the remains of monsters; the concept of ships sailing on sand seas was also influenced by The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury in which ancient Martians sailed on sand.
