The setting of Featherstone in the ancient Southwest, with ships of stone sailing on sand seas is certainly unique, although influenced by others. I grew up near Shiprock, New Mexico and was fascinated by the Navajo legend of this rock as a ship and by other legends in which other rock formations were the remains of monsters; the concept of ships sailing on sand seas was also influenced by The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury in which ancient Martians sailed on sand. The movement of the sand seas, the ability to tunnel through them and the sailing of stone ships required a bit of imagination, which, I believe enlivens the story.
